5 Simple Ways to Freshen Your Home This Summer
Lifestyle, Simple Living
Summer is the new spring clean

Summer is a lovely time to give your home a little refresh, but it doesn’t have to mean redecorating or spending a fortune. Sometimes it’s the small, practical changes that make the biggest difference — a cleaner doorway, lighter fabrics, fresh scents, open windows and a kitchen that feels ready for the season.
1. Start at the doorstep
Summer can mean, long walks, muddy gardening shoes, summer visitors, grass cuttings and you want your doorway to stay clean and welcoming. A good doormat helps here by grabbing the mud and dirt on shoes as they step in. Natural coir is a good option as the stiff, coarse bristles are fantastic at scrubbing off dirt and debris and naturally absorbent to soak the moisture when we get those (hopefully rare!) rain showers. And of course being natural they are a fantastic eco-friendly option. Bear in mind coir can shed and doesn't deal well with exposure to heavy rain or intense sunlight so are best for indoors or in sheltered porches.
2. Freshen up windows and doors
There’s something lovely about bright, clean windows in summer. The house feels lighter, fresher and more looked after straight away.
The only trouble is, sunshine has a very unforgiving way of showing up every streak, smear and grubby mark on the glass, not to mention dusty window ledges and door frames.
A quick window and door refresh can make such a difference. Start with the frames first, especially around patio doors, back doors and windows that are opened often. A damp cloth and a good everyday cleaner can lift away dust, fingerprints, pollen and those little marks we stop noticing day to day.
For the glass itself, a few simple tips can help avoid streaks:
Clean the glass when the sun isn’t shining directly on it, as heat can dry the cleaner too quickly and leave marks.
Use a clean microfibre cloth or glass cloth rather than kitchen roll.
Wipe in one direction on the inside and another on the outside, so you can spot which side any streaks are on.
Buff lightly with a dry cloth at the end for a clearer finish.
Once everything is looking brighter, it’s lovely to open the doors and let some fresh air flow through the house. That little breeze can make a home feel so much fresher, especially on warm days.
The not-so-lovely part? Flies, midges and other little visitors making their way in.
That’s where a magnetic insect guard door screen can be such a useful summer find. It lets you keep the door open for fresh air, while helping to keep flies and insects out. Some are quite plain and practical, but you can also get prettier designs now, so they don’t have to look too harsh or out of place.

Another thing to think about, especially in bedrooms, is blackout linings or blackout curtains. Summer evenings are lovely, but the lighter nights and early mornings can make it harder to settle and stay asleep. Blackout linings can be a simple way to keep the room darker without having to completely change your curtains.
3. Swap in lighter fabrics
When the sun is shining it's time lighten things up around the home, especially in the rooms you use every day.
Fresh bedding can make a bedroom feel instantly brighter. Lighter sheets, softer colours and breathable fabrics can help the room feel cooler and more comfortable on warm nights.
The same goes for towels. Swapping in fresh, brighter towels in the bathroom or kitchen can make the space feel cleaner and more summery without needing to change much else.
You can also bring in little touches of summer with simple decorative changes. I love seeing my favourite vase full of flowers on the windowsill. A small jug with garden cuttings, or a lighter tablecloth or cushion can make a room feel summer fresh.
It doesn’t need to be a full makeover. Sometimes a few light, bright touches are enough to make your home feel ready for summer.
4. Add a summer home fragrance
Scent is such a personal thing, isn’t it?
We all have certain smells that take us straight back to a memory. Freshly washed bedding on the line, cut grass, sun cream, flowers in the garden, a clean kitchen, or even that lovely fresh-air smell after the windows have been open all day.
Summer scents don’t have to be strong or obvious. Sometimes it’s the softer fragrances that make a home feel fresh and welcoming, fresh linen, clean cotton, citrus, gentle florals, or something light and airy that just makes a room feel calm.
A reed diffuser in the hallway, a room spray in the living room, or scented sachets tucked into drawers and wardrobes can add that little lift without feeling overpowering.
It’s a simple touch, but a lovely one. And when a scent reminds you of summer in your own way, it adds something lovely to everyday home life.
5. Give the kitchen a fresh start
The kitchen is often the heart of the home, but it’s also one of the hardest-working spaces.
In summer, it can feel even busier with more drinks, snacks, salads, packed lunches, garden bits, visitors, and people coming in and out. So a simple kitchen refresh can make a big difference.
It doesn’t have to mean a deep clean from top to bottom. Sometimes it’s just about replacing the tired cloths, putting out fresh tea towels, giving the sink and worktops a good clean, and making the room feel brighter again.
There’s something very satisfying about the sight of a shiny sink and clean worktops, isn’t there? It gives the whole kitchen a calmer, fresher feeling. Even if the rest of the house is busy, that one clean space can make you feel a little more on top of things.
A good multipurpose cleaner is always handy for everyday marks, sticky spots and quick wipe-downs. You might also want to freshen the fridge, clean around the bin area, add a bin freshener, or tidy up the washing-up bits that seem to gather around the sink.
These are the kind of simple finds I love sharing, practical, useful and lovely little things that help everyday home life feel that bit easier and nicer.
